Get yourself ready for the working world
Soon after finishing school, you’ll need to start applying for jobs. It’s important that you start prepping now, while you’re still at school and long before you actually need the job. As you know, finding a job can be a difficult process. For many young people it can take several years. Here are some tips to help you find a job as quickly and easily as possible.
Check your social media profiles
There’s no way to avoid it. Your future employers will Google you. They will look at your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And when they do, you don’t want them to see photos of your drunken weekend or rambling essays about your ex. It’s time for you to clean up your social media. What you want them to see is a well-rounded life filled with interests and hobbies. Don’t be afraid to post photos of your weekend hike or walk on the beach. You’ll also want to show an interest in your future career. If you’re passionate about a certain sector, post interesting articles and information. It’ll show that you’re serious about your future. Now is also the time to create a LinkedIn profile. It’s a great networking tool and can really assist with your job hunt, especially as recruiters use it to find candidates just like you. Make sure to list all of your schooling, work experience and additional studies, like computer courses or first aid training.
Learn all about your desired field
There are certain realities of the working world which school or tertiary studies will never teach you. If you’re passionate about a specific sector, it’s important that you learn as much as possible about it. Read as many books and articles as you can about the industry. Try to meet someone who works in your dream job and ask them for advice about what it’s really like. If possible, try to do an internship at your dream company and get the inside scoop about what’s really happening there. All of this knowledge and experience will impress future employers as it will be clear you’re truly interested in the industry.
Decide where you want to work
Do some research and create a list of the top companies you’d like to work for. Every year, lists are released of the 10 best companies in South Africa and the world. Find out the specifics about these companies and the work they do. If possible, find out who the top people are at these companies and spend time researching their careers. If you’re fortunate enough to be able to interview at one of these companies, you could drop something you’ve learned into the conversation, creating a personal connection and lasting impression. It’s essential that you’re proactive in your job hunt.
Practise your interview skills
You may have all the right skills and an impressive CV, but if you don’t interview well chances are you won’t get the job. Take some time to read articles about what you should and should not do. You need to be able to sell yourself and detail your skills without sounding arrogant. Practise answering questions which might come up and walk in with a list of questions you’d like to ask.
Do these now and you’ll be well on your way for your future job hunt.
