How to choose the right couch design for your first apartment
Moving into your first apartment is an exciting, yet nerve-wracking adventure. Not everything will be picture-perfect from the start, but when you do have the opportunity to purchase your first couch, make sure you make the right choice. From colour to style, size and more, there are so many things to consider.
Before you go out on a whim and purchase your first couch, here are a few things to consider:
Start measuring your lounge area before you buy anything: Measure the length, width and height of your living room to have a clear indication of what can fit inside your lounge area. The reason for measuring your ceiling is that modern apartments usually have lower ceilings, and ceilings alone can play a massive role in the illusion of space in your lounge. Other measurements to remember are doorways, to ensure that whatever you purchase will actually fit through the door of your apartment.
Think about the functionality of the item you want to buy: While it may look gorgeous, how practical will it be if you spend half your evening laying on the couch and binge-watching series? If you’re going to buy something expensive, make sure it’s functional and it can be used on a regular basis.
Consider the layout and design: Depending on the size of your living room, stuffing a large couch into the open space could really make things look and feel cluttered. That is the last thing that you want. If you want side tables or a coffee table in the middle, you’ll be looking at a whole new range of couches, because this will create more clutter if you already have a large lounge suite. Another thing to consider is that many vintage couches with the rolled arms actually make things look bigger, so be careful of the actual couch’s design. Although it might be small in size, it will make the room feel cluttered.
Here are the different types of couches explained and what you should use them for:
- The two-seater loveseat
The two-seater, classic couch is typically known as a loveseat. It’s usually got the deep button tufting and high-rolled arms that make it look extremely luxurious and romantic. The soft arms usually twirl backwards and are much higher than regular couch arms. These couches are mainly used to give a specific area a pop. For example, if you have a small, empty space that you want to spruce up a little, you could look at purchasing a loveseat. These couches are not the ones you’ll put in your living room to be used for naps. Their high-drama details make for the perfect statement chairs, ideal for decorating.
- The lawson couch
If you’re looking for something that is ideal for everyday use, but not too bulky, then the lawson couch is the perfect couch for you. The arms are high and comfortable, perfect to rest your head on when you’re feeling sleepy. Depending on the style and material that you choose, you could transform your room into something chic and comfortable in one. They are also available in leather, which is a real bonus.
- The sectional seater
The sectional couch is also known as the L-shaped or U-shaped couches which have been increasingly popular over the past couple of years. They are practical for families which have bigger lounge spaces to accommodate many people, and they are great for entertaining. They’re also extremely comfortable, therefore you would purchase one if you can afford taking up a large area with a couch.
- The recliner couches
You may be familiar with the popular Lay-Z-boy recliner couches, which allow you to sit back, flip up your feet and relax in luxury. The reclining couches come in all kinds of materials and sizes, with the most common design being the seated cushion with round arms. If you enjoy lounging in comfort, this is the ideal solution for any informal or casual lounge setting, and it’s also welcoming for guests.
- The sleeper couch
A sleeper couch is extremely convenient for one-bedroom apartments that do not have a guest bedroom to accommodate guests. When the sleeper couch is folded back, it looks like a beautiful, modern two-seater couch… which folds out into a sleeper bed for guests to sleep comfortably on. These couches come in a range of different styles and sizes, which could both play the role of casual or more upmarket. If you’re able to stretch your budget, you could find one with a quality memory foam mattress.
Now that you have a clear idea of what the different lounge suites are used for, couch shopping will be far easier. Each model, style, size and make come at different prices, so be sure to purchase something that matches your requirements and helps you feel at home. It’s important to buy something that is of good quality, so shop around and do your research before you make any impulse purchases.
